Debt Payoff Calculator: Snowball vs Avalanche

Enter your debts and any extra you can pay each month. See your debt-free date, total interest, and the payoff order for both methods.

How it works

What is the debt snowball method?

You pay the minimum on every debt and throw every extra dollar at the smallest balance. When it's gone, its payment rolls into the next smallest. Quick wins keep you motivated.

What is the debt avalanche method?

Same idea, but you target the debt with the highest interest rate first. It always costs the same or less in interest than the snowball.

Which method is better?

Avalanche is mathematically cheaper; snowball is often easier to stick with. The calculator shows exactly how much the difference is for your debts — often it's small, so pick the one you'll actually follow.
