50/30/20 Budget Calculator

Type your monthly take-home pay. We'll split it into needs, wants and savings — and you can change the percentages to fit your life.

What is the 50/30/20 rule?

The 50/30/20 rule is a simple starting point for a budget: about half of your after-tax income goes to things you must pay (needs), 30% to things you choose (wants), and 20% to your future — savings, investing and paying down debt faster. If your rent is high, a 60/20/20 or 70/20/10 split can be more realistic. The point is to give every dollar a job.

Once you know your targets, track what you actually spend for a month. That's where a simple spreadsheet helps: you'll see category by category whether you're on plan. If you already plan in Notion, the Budget & Finance Tracker for Notion does the same as you log each transaction.
