Gift guide FAQ
What do new parents actually need?
Sleep, food and help. Practical things that save time at night or during the day, a few frozen meals or an offer of an hour's help often go furthest. If they have a registry, start there.
Is it OK to buy baby sleep products as a gift?
Check with the parents first. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies sleep on their backs on a firm, flat surface with no pillows, bumpers, blankets or soft toys in the sleep space, so skip pillows, quilts, bumpers, sleep positioners and inclined or weighted sleep products; a fitted sheet made for their crib mattress is fine.
What's a good gift for the parents rather than the baby?
Something for the long nights (a water bottle with a straw, a night light, a long phone cable) or a meal they don't have to cook. A printed feeding log helps when everything starts to blur.
