The 50/30/20 Rule Explained

Split your take-home pay into three buckets: about 50% for needs, 30% for wants and 20% for savings and extra debt payments. It's the simplest budget that still works.

50% needs

Rent or mortgage, utilities, groceries, insurance, transport to work, minimum debt payments.

30% wants

Dining out, streaming, hobbies, shopping, travel, upgrades you could live without.

20% savings

Emergency fund, retirement, investing, and anything you pay on debt above the minimum.

50/30/20 at different incomes (monthly take-home)

IncomeNeeds 50%Wants 30%Savings 20%
$2,500$1,250$750$500
$3,500$1,750$1,050$700
$4,500$2,250$1,350$900
$6,000$3,000$1,800$1,200
$8,000$4,000$2,400$1,600

Want your own numbers? Use the 50/30/20 calculator; it also lets you change the percentages.

Making it stick

Set up an automatic transfer for the 20% on payday, then track your needs and wants for a month to see where you really are. Most people find one category, often food or subscriptions, quietly eating into savings.

50/30/20 FAQ

Is 50/30/20 based on gross or net income?

Net: your take-home pay after taxes. If your employer deducts retirement contributions, you can count them toward the 20%.

What if my needs are more than 50%?

That's common with high rent. Try 60/20/20 or 70/20/10 for now, and look for one big fixed cost to lower over time.

Does debt go in needs or savings?

Minimum payments are needs. Anything extra you pay toward debt counts toward the 20%.
